DRAW NEAR. SEEK GOD. MAKE ROOM FOR HIM.

FASTING GUIDE

Fasting is more than simply going without food it is intentionally setting something aside to make more room for God. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s people fast when they are seeking His direction, pursuing His presence, repenting, preparing for what He is doing, or crying out to Him in prayer.
Biblical fasting is a spiritual discipline that helps us quiet the distractions around us and turn our attention toward the One who matters most.
When we fast, we’re not trying to get God’s attention we’re positioning our hearts to give Him ours.

WHY DO WE FAST?

To Put God First
Fasting is a way of resetting our priorities and reminding ourselves that God is our source. We intentionally lay something aside so we can seek Him above everything else.
To Draw Closer to God
Fasting creates space to spend intentional time in prayer, worship, Scripture, and His presence. As we seek Him, our relationship with Him deepens.
To Seek God’s Direction
Throughout Scripture, people fasted when they needed wisdom, clarity, and direction. Fasting helps us slow down and seek God’s heart before making decisions.
To Strengthen Our Faith
Fasting teaches us dependence. It reminds us that we don't have to rely on our own strength we can rely completely on God.
To Pursue Breakthrough
There are moments in Scripture when God’s people prayed and fasted as they cried out to Him for help, deliverance, healing, direction, and breakthrough. Fasting doesn't manipulate God or guarantee a specific outcome, but it brings us before Him with surrendered and expectant hearts.
To Repent and Realign
Fasting can be an outward expression of an inward decision to turn back toward God. It gives us an opportunity to examine our hearts, surrender what has been competing for our attention, and realign ourselves with His will.

FASTING IS ABOUT SURRENDER.

The goal of fasting isn't simply to go without something. The goal is to make room for God.
As you fast, let the time you would normally spend eating or engaging with whatever you have chosen to set aside become an opportunity to pray, worship, read Scripture, and listen for God's voice.
Instead of focusing on what you're giving up, focus on Who you're drawing closer to.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 that fasting is not meant to be a performance for others. It is a personal act of devotion between you and God. What happens in secret matters to Him.

“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:18

WHAT DOES FASTING LOOK LIKE?

There are different examples of fasting throughout Scripture, and not every fast looks the same. Some people fast from food completely for a specific period of time, while others practice a partial fast by limiting certain foods or setting aside something that regularly occupies their attention.
Whatever type of fast you choose, the heart behind it matters.
Pray. Seek. Surrender. Listen.
Use your time of fasting to intentionally pursue God through:
  • Prayer
  • Reading Scripture
  • Worship
  • Journaling
  • Quiet time with God
  • Seeking His direction
  • Repentance and surrender

OUR HEART IN FASTING

We don't fast because we believe we can earn God's favor.
We fast because we want more of Him.
We fast because we want to hear His voice more clearly.
We fast because we want our hearts aligned with His heart.
We fast because we want to surrender our plans and trust His.
We fast because we believe God is still moving, still speaking, and still working.
Fasting doesn't change God it changes our posture before Him.

Fasting doesn't change God it changes our posture before Him.

COME HUNGRY FOR GOD.

Whatever you're believing for, whatever you're walking through, and whatever God may be asking you to surrender, use this time to draw near.

Set your heart. Silence the distractions. Seek His presence.

God has more for you than what you can see right now.

“Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” — Joel 2:12

CHOOSE YOUR FAST

There are several ways you can participate in a biblical fast. The purpose isn't to choose the “hardest” fast it’s to intentionally set something aside and create space to seek God.
Pray first. Ask the Lord what He is inviting you to surrender and how He wants you to seek Him during this time. Your fast should be a personal decision between you and God, not something you feel pressured into by a church leader, a friend, or even this guide.
FULL FAST
Drink only liquids for a designated period of time. You determine the number of days based on what you feel God is leading you to do.
DANIEL FAST
Eat primarily fruits and vegetables and drink water. Traditionally, this fast excludes meat, sweets, and bread. The focus is on simplifying your diet so you can intentionally focus your heart and attention on God.
3-DAY FAST
Choose a type of fast and commit to it for three days. This could be a full fast, Daniel fast, giving up a specific food or drink, or another meaningful sacrifice that you prayerfully choose.
PARTIAL FAST
A partial fast involves abstaining from food during a specific portion of the day, commonly from sunrise to sunset. You can combine this with a full or Daniel-style fast, or simply choose specific foods to abstain from during that time.
LET GOD LEAD YOU
Before beginning your fast, take time to pray and ask God what He wants this season to look like for you.
What is He asking you to surrender?
What are you believing Him for?
Where do you need His direction?
What areas of your life need to be brought back into alignment with Him?
Don't choose your fast based on what someone else is doing. Ask God to lead you.
As we begin the year by intentionally seeking God, we believe He will meet us in our surrender, strengthen our faith, and guide our steps.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
